According to a Monday (February 15, 2010) news report in The Vail Spot, US Senator Barbara "Babs" Mikulski (Maryland – D), after serving in the US Senate for almost 24 years, is set to announce that she will not run for re-election.

"Her possible announcement along with that of [US Senators] Evan Bayh and Byron Dorgan will be third Democratic Senator announcing plans to retire."

According to The Vail Spot, Mikulski seriously fractured her ankle last fall and due to the severity of the fracture had open reduction surgery, that included the insertion of pins, as well as the use of a special surgical boot.  Her recovery has been exceptionally slow.

The Vail Spot continued that "one of Mikulski's complaints is that the health insurance that is provided for Congress is "poor" with high deductibles and "limitations" on coverage."

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee denied the news. However, according to the Baltimore Examiner, "If Mikulski did retire, Republican challenger Dr. Eric Wargotz's chances for an upset election win this year would increase."  (Baltimore Examiner, February 15, 2010, www.examiner.com)
